In our opinion, this is probably the best Clydesdale spot since Bud’s 9/11 tribute in 2002. What do you think?

I mean, seriously, it’s deodorant. They could have done so much more with this spot, but they went with a guy picking up panties in a laundromat.

Whatever. It’s their $3.8 million, not mine.

Finally, a pre-game release worth getting excited about. In this spot for Taco Bell, a group of senior citizens sneak out of a retirement home to have a crazy night on the town. The premise is funny enough as it is, but Taco Bell scores bonus points for using the Spanish version of the song “We Are Young”, which made it big after being used in a Chevy ad during last year’s big game.

They played the hell out of that song on the radio, but I still get goose bumps when the music kicks in on that Chevy spot. Great ad.

Last week, Volkswagen released a Super Bowl teaser featuring reggae icon Jimmy Cliff encouraging a throng of YouTube meltdown stars to cheer up. The video did its job by scoring tons of pre-game buzz for the brand. Not long after that, VW released it’s 60-second in-game commercial. The spot features a tall, shirt-and-tie white guy who uses a spot-on Jamaican accent to encourage his bummed out co-workers to “Get happy.”

If you ask me, it’s hilarious, and just the right combination of feel good and funny (not too much of either one) that helped VW break through the traffic jam of car ads in the Big Game in recent years and win the SpotBowl title in 2011 and 2012.

Only thing is, not everyone is a fan of the spot. Some are calling it racist. To be fair, most of the people calling it racist are uptight critics. In an online poll by the Today show, 93 percent of viewers liked the spot.

Oh, and its newest fan? The entire nation of Jamaica.

The island’s government has endorsed the commercial, according to the Miami Herald. Sure, they could be endorsing it because it paints such a positive picture of the island’s culture and will likely result in at least a small bump in tourism dollars. Or they could be endorsing it because, like the ad suggests, Jamaicans are a generally cheerful bunch who don’t get all worked up over a 60-second TV commercial.

Slapstick has been an iconic form of entertainment for a long time (Charlie Chaplin, The Three Stooges, Tom and Jerry) and continues to be a valuable source of comedy that appeals to the masses. We see it in commercials now in addition to TV and movies, and the Super Bowl is often host to several ads featuring physical comedy.

We’ve found a few standout Super Bowl ads (and some that weren’t as good) that feature slapstick. Here are the three best ones:

THE BEST SLAPSTICK ADS

3. Snickers: Football with Betty White and Abe Vigoda (2010)

The theme of this commercial is that without a Snickers bar, people get hungry and dysfunctional (in this case, they play football like cranky old people). Two players, portrayed by Betty White and Abe Vigoda (did you know he’s still alive?), spend the commercial getting knocked to the ground until offered a Snickers. They then return to the game as twentysomethings. Other Snickers commercials feature similar situations, but none compare to a then 88-year-old woman getting tackled into the mud.

2. Hyundai: CPR (2012)

There’s nothing funny about a heart attack. And there’s nothing funny about your boss having a heart attack right before he tells you the secret to business success. But there is something funny about this guy reviving his boss by repeatedly accelerating and braking to simulate CPR. Maybe it’s the creativity of the driver that we like. Or maybe it’s the boss’s head flopping around from his “compressions.” Yeah, it’s probably that.

1. Doritos: Teasing the dog (2012)

This is a Doritos-style spin on the old Windex commercials featuring the birds who don’t see the window and fly right into it. In this case, though, a mean dog owner tempts his dog with a Doritos chip through a plate-glass window. Viewers may hold their breath as they await impact, but Doritos took the high road with this fan-made spot, reasserting two important life lessons: You have to eat what you dish out, and nothing can stop a Doritos lover from their craving.

THE WORST SLAPSTICK ADS

And here are three of the commercials that missed the mark:

3. Bud Light: Fist bump is out, slap is in (2007)

Unlike the Budweiser “Wassup” campaign, this did not influence social interactions, and we’re okay with that for several reasons. First, the world doesn’t need another “Wassup.” Second, this ad replaces the fist bump with a slap in the face, so we’re glad that didn’t catch on. This ad was funny, but it wasn’t among the best because it didn’t use the product effectively, like our top three commercials did. Also, there’s a big difference between reviving your boss with your car and slapping him in the face.

2. Snickers: Mechanics kiss (2007)

We faulted Bud Light for not incorporating enough of their product in their ad. This ad does the opposite: Snickers puts their product at the center of a kiss. In the ad, two mechanics accidentally share a Snickers bar, hands-free, which results in a kiss. Ashamed, they try to act manly. The commercial is funny, but Snickers got into trouble for using a homophobic overreaction as a punch line. After a very brief television run, the ad was pulled. Remember, if you make a commercial, make sure you won’t offend any fans with it.

1. Reebok: Terry Tate, Office Linebacker (2003)

Ever wish your office had someone to enforce office etiquette? Meet Terry Tate, Office Linebacker. Tate protects the offices of Felcher & Sons from inconsiderate people with his own kind of justice. The slapstick comedy works because it’s such unexpected behavior in an office setting. However, the ad fails to promote the brand effectively. Did you know when you saw it that the ad was for Reebok? The ads were popular, but brand retention was very poor. If the ad was entertaining, but if know one knows what it promotes, Reebok loses in the long run. This earned the number one spot in the losing bracket because it was the funniest but least effective.

Through a pre-game vote on its YouTube page, Audi asked fans to choose the ending of its Super Bowl spot. The ad (below) features a young man who goes to the prom without a date, but feeling confident because his dad let him borrow the families Audi S6 sport sedan. The teen takes the principal’s parking spot and, after kissing the prom queen, has a run-in with the prom king.

Like a boss, as the kids say these days. The other two endings can be seen here. Although the other versions aren’t bad, the fans definitely made the right choice.

Ad guru turned corporate rebel Alex Bogusky — the guy behind the “Creepy King” Burger King spots and Adweek’s reigning “Creative Director of the Decade” — tweeted on Friday that the spot his new agency created for SodaStream has been rejected by CBS.

According to MSN Money, the spot for the at-home soda maker depicted truck drivers in clothing with Pepsi and Coke logos. The jab was apparently too much for CBS, who’d no doubt like to avoid angering two of its biggest advertisers.

According to Bogusky, “SodaStream is still in the game with an older spot we tweaked.” The “older spot” — released late last year — will be the one below with the woman in the voiceover who whistles her S’s annoyingly. Let’s hope that’s one of the tweaks Bogusky was referring to.

That’s exactly what Research in Motion (RIM) is doing with its first ever Super Bowl ad to promote its seemingly defeated Blackberry 10 smartphone. The Blackberry — once a must have device — has floundered in recent years thanks to competition from the iPhone and Android.

No details are known about the spot. Will RIM’s hail mary pass be caught for a touchdown? Maybe, but RIM is trailing the competition be four or five touchdowns, so it won’t really matter.

That’s right, they spent $3.8 million and didn’t even attempt to talk about the benefits of actually using the product. That’s a pretty bold move.

The spot ends with the equally bold assertion that “nothing beats an astronaut.” I’m not sure if I agree with that statement. Astronauts are definitely high on the cool meter, but I can think of at least five things that are cooler. Among them: Being Derek Jeter. He’s way cooler than some guy collecting moon rocks.

Below is one of Hyundai’s Super Bowl ads, a second quarter spot called “Stuck.” It’s charming and a little entertaining — sort of like a Hyundai — but it feels like any other car ad you might see during the year. Yeah, it packs plenty of small jokes into 30 seconds — a creepy biker, hazardous waste, drooling dogs — but it lacks a key component of any good Super Bowl commercial: The big payoff at the end.

There’s no punchline. No “Oh, did you see that?!” moment that makes people miss the first five seconds of the next commercial. It’s just sort of … cute. Unfortunately, cute doesn’t win Super Bowl advertising competitions.

USA Today has reported that this year’s Super Bowl car ads — of which nearly 25 percent of the game’s spots will be — won’t look like the usual car ads. That’s a good thing. Said USA Today, “Rather than showing cars hugging curves and accelerating up hills, a larger-than-ever group of Super Bowl automotive advertisers will be featuring womanly curves and revving up humor to promote their big-ticket machines.”

One of those car companies is Kia, which will air a 30-second ad and a 60-second ad in next Sunday’s game.

The 30-second spot will promote the brand’s compact Forte. In the ad, a robot-like woman (former Miss USA Alyssa Campanella) assaults a man after he kicks the tire of the new Forte EX compact sedan. The 60-second spot for the Sorento crossover SUV will feature a father who answers his son’s question – “Where do babies come from?” – with a tall tale involving toddlers and baby animals coming to Earth via spaceships.

Overall it’s an okay spot (just okay), but it scores points for being a major departure from Go Daddy’s usual “scantily clad women” formula. Don’t blink or you’ll miss Danica Patrick in an unusually minor role. But given her acting skills, maybe that was intentional.

Best Buy has announced that its upcoming Super Bowl ad will star former Saturday Night Live comedian Amy Poehler. Poehler currently stars in the sitcom Parks & Recreation and is fresh off of a well-received Golden Globes co-hosting gig.

“Because of the complexity of technology today, folks have lots of questions,” said Scott Durchslag, president of online and global e-commerce for Best Buy in a USA Today article. “Amy is this comedic everyperson who can make things simple. And Best Buy is trying to accomplish the same thing — making technology simple.”
