Every year, CBS airs its “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials Special,” and every year I remind myself to set my DVR to record it, but I never do. It’s no big loss. I’ve seen every Super Bowl commercial they’d probably air anyhow, but the trip down memory lane would still be nice.
This year’s special will air on Wednesday, February 1 at 7 p.m. (they couldn’t even give it prime time placement?), and the network is shaking things up a bit. The first move: former annual hosts Jim Nantz and Lara Spencer have been replaced with Boomer Esiason and Jillian Michaels. That’s a good move.
Admittedly, Boomer and Jillian are probably a more entertaining duo. Boomer had a 14-year NFL career, during which he watched way more Super Bowls than he played in (one), so he definitely knows a thing or two about the ads. As for former Biggest Loser trainer/drill sergeant Jillian Michaels, I have no idea why she’s there.
Also this year, CBS is hosting an online poll in which ad fans can vote for their favorite Super Bowl commercials. The top three spots will be announced during the February 1st special, and viewers will be allowed to vote again for the ultimate winner.
