IS AN ANTI-ABORTION AD IN THE SUPER BOWL A BAD IDEA?

So much has happened since my last update, but the biggest news in the Super Bowl advertising world right now is that a Christian group called Focus on the Family has purchased a 30-second spot during the big game and plans to air a pro-life ad featuring Heisman trophy-winning quarterback, Tim Tebow.

In addition to being an outspoken Christian, Tim also has a personal connection to the pro-life perspective. While on a mission trip in the Philippines in 1987, Tim’s mother, Pam, became gravely ill, but ignored advice by doctors to have an abortion.

Now I know a lot of people are probably dumbfounded that a pro-life group has decided to advertise during the Super Bowl, but as odd as the spot may seem, it’s not as ill-conceived as you might think. Is an anti-abortion ad a tad out-of-place during the Super Bowl? Perhaps. Is it a message you’re in the mood to listen to halfway through your fourth beer and third meatball sub? Probably not. Is it guaranteed to make millions of people reconsider their views on a controversial topic? You bet.
