Happy birthday dear Groundbreaking-Yet-Slightly-Overproduced-Apple-MacIntosh-1984 Commercial!

Happy 25th birthday to you!

On January 22, 1984, Apple unveiled its now legendary “1984″ Super Bowl ad which helped put Apple on the map (albeit one still dominated by Microsoft) and began a new era for Super Bowl advertising. Back then it was one of the most expensive ads ever created, with a budget of $900,000. And what do you expect when you hire Hollywood director Ridley Scott to oversee the spot? The guy directed Aliens and Blade Runner for cryin’ out loud!

It’s a great ad and all, but why’s the heroine wearing a tank top and orange jogging shorts? We know it was an Olympic year, but did they run out of money when it came to costuming the character who’s supposed to usher in a new era of personal computing technology?
